Diet Suitable for Underactive Thyroid

When the thyroid gland is not working properly, the metabolism can slow down, causing weight gain. This type of thyroid dysfunction, also called hypothyroidism, is controlled by taking a thyroid hormone replacement and following a diet plan to reduce weight while nurturing the thyroid gland. Knowing which foods to eat and which foods to avoid is important in order to lose weight while controlling hypothyroidism.

Adding Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has the potential to encourage healthy thyroid functioning, increase metabolism and regulate weight, according to physiologist Ray Peat. Although coconut oil contains saturated fat, its medium-chain fatty acids help speed up metabolism. Coconut oil for consumption should be extra-virgin, meaning that it is taken from the first pressing of the raw coconut meat. Coconut oil should be eaten raw, as heating it changes the properties in the oil. It can be spread on toast or used in a fruit smoothie.

Avoiding Processed Foods

Processed foods are highly refined and can contain saturated fats, sugars and artificial flavorings and colorings. Eating a lot of processed foods feeds the body empty calories, leading to weight gain. Eat foods high in fiber and vitamins. Include a variety of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins such as fish and chicken breast, whole grains such as oats and brown rice, nuts and seeds. Avoid heavy meats such as beef and pork, which contain heavy saturated fats.

Avoiding Refined Sugars

Refined sugars spike the blood sugar, then leave the blood stream quickly, which causes a blood-sugar crash. This cycle taxes the pancreas and throws the thyroid gland out of balance, exacerbating hypothyroidism. Avoid eating refined sugars that are typically in sodas, pastries, candies, cookies and crackers. If you have a sweet tooth, replace refined sugars with natural-sugar alternatives, such as stevia, agave nectar or blackstrap molasses. These natural sweeteners can be added to tea, coffee, baked goods and cereals to provide a sweet treat without spiking blood-sugar levels.
