What Are the Benefits of CoQ10 Supplements?

Found naturally in every cell of the body, CoQ10 levels may naturally become depleted after the age of 40. It is described by Nicholas Perricone, M.D., in his New York Times bestselling book "The Wrinkle Cure" as one of the most vital antioxidants necessary for cell protection and repair. UV radiation or other environmental toxins we're exposed to every day, may deplete the body's source of it, so taking CoQ10 supplements can help rebalance your levels of this helpful enzyme.

Function of CoQ10

Known as the "energy-boosting antioxidant," CoQ10 is responsible for increasing energy production, known as cellular metabolism, in the mitochondria of the cell. In addition, CoQ10 is found in especially concentrated amounts in the cell's membrane, where it is needed to protect the cell from free-radical, or oxidative, damage.

For Aging Skin

Because CoQ10 is fat soluble, when supplements are taken internally they will be better able to reach the cell membrane. Taking CoQ10 supplements helps protect the skin from premature aging and may even help reverse skin damage. Found naturally in salmon, nuts and red meat, CoQ10---in natural or supplement form---makes sense for slowing the again g of your skin. An added bonus, many report increased energy levels.

Applied Topically

According to Dr. Perricone, topical creams that contain CoQ10 may be very effective in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Ideal for a topical application as well as taken internally as a supplement, CoQ10 is completely nontoxic and helps prevent this aging without side effects.

For the Heart

Essential for a healthy heart, those who take CoQ10 supplements to improve cardiovascular health may also receive benefits of lowered blood pressure levels.

Heart patients are often given prescription medications, known as statin, that lower their blood cholesterol, but statins also lower CoQ10 levels, which may cause dry skin. Supplementing the diet with CoQ10 will counter this effect and provide the heart with protection from further oxidative damage.

Recommended Dosage

Dr. Perricone recommends that those who are under the age of 40 supplement their diet with 30 to 100 milligrams of CoQ10 per day. Those who are over the age of 40 should take 100 milligrams daily. Dosage amounts should be divided between breakfast and lunch. Those who are taking CoQ10 because they have heart disease should ask their physician what dosage is right for them.
