Post Colonoscopy Diet

A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a physician examines the lining of a patient's colon in search of abnormalities, such as polyps and tumors. A flexible camera is inserted into the rectum and searches for irregularities. The procedure can also involve the painless removal of any polyps found in the colon.

Post-operation diet

While a patient must follow strict dietary instructions in preparation for a colonoscopy, a normal diet may resume following the procedure. It is recommended that the patient avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours after the operation.

Side effects and relief

You might experience stomach discomfort or nausea when you try to eat after the procedure as a result of medications administered during the colonoscopy. Let your doctor know about these symptoms, wait until the nausea passes, and try to eat again later. If desired, you can take a simple antacid or over-the-counter stomachache relief medication.
