The Best Fast Food Choices for Diabetics

According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), one of the most crucial aspects of successfully managing diabetes is consuming a healthy diet. The ADA also asserts that healthy choices can be made at fast food restaurants.

Healthy Breakfast Options

The best breakfast options include English muffins, toast or a plain bagel. Suitable drinks include low-fat milk and fruit juice. Unbuttered pancakes or scrambled eggs are also acceptable. Sausage and bacon should be limited because they have a high fat content.

Sandwich Options

Choose sandwiches containing broiled or grilled meats such as chicken breast, turkey, ham or roast beef. Ask for no mayonnaise and add mustard if desired. Adding lettuce, tomatoes and onions is perfectly acceptable. Restaurants such as McDonald's, Arby's, Wendy's, Burger King and Subway all have offerings that meet these guidelines.

Salad Options

Fast food salads with only vegetables or grilled meats is another good option. Order low-fat salad dressing and avoid croutons and bacon bits. Some fast food restaurants may even have salad bars. In this case, load up on mostly vegetables and use low-fat dressing sparingly.

Other Fast Food Options

Healthy fast food options at Mexican restaurants such as Taco Bell include bean burritos, chicken soft tacos or chicken fajitas. Add lettuce, tomatoes and salsa as desired. Limit guacamole, cheese and sour cream--all high in fat. Another good fast food option is thin-crust vegetable pizza such as those available at Pizza Hut. For dessert, enjoy an ice cream cone with fat-free frozen yogurt.

Items to Avoid

Avoid croissants and biscuits. Avoid fast food items described with the words super-sized, biggie-sized and jumbo. Avoid taco salads because the shells are full of fat and calories. Avoid Chinese food items because they often contain excess sodium and fat.
