Chromium is a mineral that is found in the body in trace amounts. According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements, chromium is necessary for certain bodily functions, primarily the metabolism of sugars, carbs, fat and protein. With the emphasis put on metabolism and weight loss, many partake in chromium supplementation for weight loss.

Picolinate vs. Polynicotinate

    There are two popular chromium supplements. One is called chromium picolinate, and the other chromium polynicotinate. In the picolinate supplement, chromium is combined with the amino acid called tryptophan. With the chromium polynicotinate supplement, chromium is bound to a form of the B vitamin, niacin. A report from The Supplement Research Foundation states that while both types of supplements are safe, chromium polynicotinate is more easily absorbed by the body.

    There have been numerous studies done on the effectiveness of chromium polynicotinate and its effectiveness for aiding in weight loss. One study published in the official journal of The American College of Sports Medicine found that when chromium polynicotinate was combined with an exercise program, there was significant weight loss. On the other hand, when chromium picolinate was used, the subjects experienced weight gain. In another study reported in the "Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Journal," subjects that partook in chromium polynicotinate supplementation not only lost weight, they kept muscle mass while reducing fat body mass.

    If you are on a weight reduction program, all evidence points to using chromium polynicotinate to help with that reduction. As noted, it helps with the metabolism of sugars, carbs and proteins, and regulates the body's insulin levels. As the studies above have shown, it is most efficient when combined with an exercise program. The recommended dosage is from 200 mg to 600 mg daily. Before beginning supplementation, speak to your health care provider about the dosage you should take, especially if you are on any medications. The niacin in chromium polynicotinate can cause flushing and adverse reactions in some people, so it is best to speak to your physician before including it in your daily routine.
